How to spend and earn bitcoin and cryptocurrency in Chicago

Compared to fiat money, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are relatively new to the financial market. Nevertheless, current analyses show that many cryptocurrencies are finding more and more owners. Until now, many crypto owners have viewed crypto mainly as an investment, where they store their money, ready to sell at the right time. In some industries, however, there now appears to be a trend toward an increasing number of users utilizing cryptocurrencies as an everyday payment method.

According to a report by Chainalysis, North America is currently the strongest crypto market worldwide. Chicago is already noticing the increased presence of crypto across various industries.

Quick and easy: Paying in person and online

Many businesses across Chicago are already experimenting with including crypto as an alternative payment option, with Bitcoin being one of the most popular digital currencies. Crypto payments are also becoming increasingly popular for online shopping. While some retailers already accept crypto directly, others approve of gift cards purchased with crypto that can be redeemed. Alternatively, consumers can usually pay with cryptocurrencies via gateway apps. This is to say, as most restaurants and shops usually still accept crypto only indirectly, through payment gateways.

Leading crypto use: Online gaming

Casino gambling and crypto ownership often go hand in hand. Crypto payments not only allow users to remain anonymous but also promise fast transactions without fees. Casino expert Wilna van Wyk explains that Bitcoin instant withdrawal casinos are preferred by many players as they promise their users speed, security, and seamless crypto integration. This allows customers to make deposits and withdrawals quickly and easily, without having to account for long waiting times until the transaction has gone through. For these reasons, many gamblers prefer using cryptocurrencies as a payment method over traditional banking services, and the number of crypto users in this sector is growing significantly.

Restaurants and supermarkets accepting Bitcoin

Large chain restaurants and supermarkets such as Starbucks and Whole Foods are leading the crypto wave and integrating Bitcoin into everyday purchases. To pay with crypto at Starbucks, customers simply need their Starbucks card, which has been preloaded with Bitcoin via the app. With this card, customers can then easily purchase their coffee to go with crypto. It works similarly at Whole Foods: customers first need to download the SPEDN app, which can be loaded with either fiat money or crypto. At checkout, customers can then use this card to make a crypto payment without any problems.

Crypto ATMs across Chicago

Alternatively, crypto users can withdraw money from so-called crypto ATMs. According to Coin ATM Radar, there are already a total of 1,080 Bitcoin ATMs in and around Chicago, and this number is sure to rise further. The Illinois Senate is currently working on a new bill for crypto ATM regulations. As cryptocurrency usage has reached an all-time high and the industry's public visibility is increasing, consumer protection regulations are being developed to make the use of crypto safer.

For crypto users who want to use the currency for their everyday purchases, this means researching payment options at retailers, restaurants, and shops in advance, and, if necessary, downloading apps such as PayPal, Stripe, or Braintree, which can serve as payment gateways. The growing number of crypto ATMs in Chicago will also make on-site payments easier in the future.

Earning in crypto—not just spending

Some companies are already going one step further and making it possible to pay salaries entirely or partially in crypto. However, such a contract can only be concluded through a clear agreement between the employer and the employee. The Japanese GMO Internet Group is a pioneer in this field and has been offering its employees the option of receiving part of their salaries in crypto since 2018. Similar models are now also being discussed in the US.

For years, there has been talk that blockchain will fundamentally change the infrastructure of financial markets. In the US, three laws were recently passed that, according to a report by Reuters, will support the development of tokenization. President Donald Trump’s administration has eased regulations of the broader crypto industry, promoting rapid growth in crypto-related securities and trading.

With the development of stablecoins, i.e., cryptocurrencies that are pegged to the US dollar and maintain a constant value as a result of this peg, transactions, especially across national borders, will become easier in the future. For large businesses in Chicago with multiple locations across the globe, this could be a game-changer. While legal requirements regarding minimum wage, tax documents, and social security contributions currently still make pure crypto wages somewhat complicated in some jurisdictions, this will likely change in the near future.

Why is crypto becoming more popular?

In an increasingly international world where business is carried out across national borders, the demand for efficient payment methods is growing. Digital transactions can often take several days, which significantly slows down business operations. In addition, high transaction fees and exchange rate fees are often incurred when payments are made internationally. Especially for countries whose currencies are unstable or weak, crypto offers an opportunity to participate in the global economy. As a result, there is growing acceptance of and trust in cryptocurrencies, which are increasingly becoming a realistic and practical payment method for both consumers and merchants.
