Northwestern and Rush tie for top spots of best IL hospitals, named in top 20 nationally

Two Chicago hospitals, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center, are once again ranked among the top 20 hospitals in the nation, according to the Chicago Tribune. The two hospitals tied for the top spot in Illinois and were included on U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll, which highlights the country’s best-performing hospitals.

It is the fourth time Northwestern and Rush have shared the No. 1 ranking in the state, according to the reports. Northwestern Memorial also remained among the nation’s elite, while Rush continued to be recognized for high-level care across several specialties.

Statewide rankings and specialty honors

U.S. News ranked more than 4,500 hospitals using measures that include death rates, preventable complications, patient experience and nursing care, as reported by NBC Chicago. Only 178 hospitals nationally ranked in one or more specialties.

Northwestern Memorial had six programs placed among the top five in the country, including neurosurgery and neurology at No. 2. Its gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, and pulmonary and lung surgery programs were ranked fourth, while diabetes, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology were ranked fifth, the reports confirmed.

Chicago’s Shirley Ryan AbilityLab was again named the nation’s No. 1 hospital for rehabilitation, a position it has held for more than three decades, NBC Chicago said.

Other Illinois hospitals in the Top 10 included the University of Chicago Medical Center, Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and Endeavor Health NorthShore Hospitals in Evanston. U.S. News also recognized five Illinois hospitals as best regional hospitals for serving underserved patients. Those hospitals were Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Advocate Trinity Hospital, University of Chicago Medical Center, Ascension Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village, and Advocate Christ Medical Center.
