Despite the cold, Bears’ playoff aspirations heat up with victory over Cleveland Browns

Monday morning, many Bears fans woke up to a strange sensation. Gone was the usual pain and despair of Bears fandom, and in its place something new…is that hope…even belief? Many were unsure as the last 40 years of Bears football had not provided much to base off of, but a quick Google search and a call to their medical provider confirmed to many that this was, in fact, the emotions that stirred within them.

The Bears, who kicked off Sunday's game under frigid conditions, cruised to a 31-3 victory over the struggling Cleveland Browns in a game that went down as the fourth coldest ever played at Soldier Field.

While temperatures continued to drop, the Bears' playoff aspirations continued to heat up. The win put the team at a 10-4 record and, thanks to critical losses by divisional foes the Lions and Packers, moved the Bears into first place in the NFC Central and second in the NFC overall, giving the organization a stranglehold on the division and an excellent opportunity to make the postseason for the first time since 2020.

The Bears, who were coming off a backbreaking loss to arch rival Green Bay the weekend prior, faced the lowly Browns in a game that felt like a must win ahead of a string of challenging matchups to finish the season including a rematch with the Packers, an away game versus the playoff hopeful 49ers, and a home game versus a Lions team that beat them by 31 in September. 

Thankfully, the Bears went out and handled business with a style and confidence that reflects the exciting new culture coursing through the organization since head coach Ben Johnson's appointment over the offseason. 

The contest saw the Bears crucially establish their run game early, leading to a DeAndre Swift score before Caleb Williams hit DJ Moore for a touchdown, giving them a 14-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter that the Browns never looked like coming back from.

Things slowed down offensively for the Bears in some respects as the game progressed, but strong special teams play from returner Devon Duvernay and a trio of interceptions by Browns rookie quarterback Shadeur Sanders provided great field position throughout the day that led to another Swift touchdown and an incredible pass and catch from Williams to Moore for their 2nd connections of the afternoon.

Bears fans were happy to see Williams bounce back after a challenging outing at Lambeau Field, finishing vs. the Browns 17-28 with 242 yards and 2 touchdowns. Beyond the wins and losses, for many, this season was about seeing the progression of Caleb Williams and his connection with coach Johnson and the team's new playbook. This win was another step, albeit a small one, in the right direction for a team that is trying to rise above its organization's lamented history, and a young QB looking to live up to the hype of being the 1st overall draft pick.

So, as the Bears rest up on their Monday off and the weather starts to return to non-polar vortex levels, Windy City fans can rejoice in playing competent, meaningful football in December and look with hope and belief (those funny new feelings) towards a promising postseason ahead.

The Bears face off against the Green Bay Packers for the second time this season at home in a special Saturday night game this coming weekend. With the primetime lights bright, the game should be a great opportunity for the team to showcase itself on the national stage and build momentum heading into the home stretch of the regular season.
