Celebrate Harold Ramis at Harry Caray’s with togas, chaos and Animal House legends

Fans of comedy and Chicago culture will gather at Harry Caray’s on Navy Pier, Monday, February 2, to honor one of the city’s most beloved creative minds, Harold Ramis, at the 3rd Annual Harold Ramis Day Celebration. The free public event kicks off at 3:00 p.m. CST, blending the cherished traditions of Groundhog Day with a playful National Lampoon’s Animal House twist that promises laughter, nostalgia and unforgettable moments. 

This year’s celebration flips the familiar Groundhog Day script by incorporating a cross-over theme that pays tribute not only to Ramis’ iconic 1993 film Groundhog Day, but also to his breakthrough 1978 comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House. After two years of focusing primarily on Groundhog Day, the event shifts into high gear with a spirited homage to the irreverent energy of Faber College’s Greek Row, inviting attendees to embrace a bit of chaos and comedy in true Ramis fashion. 

Leading the festivities will be several beloved Animal House cast members. Tim “Otter” Matheson will serve as Master of Ceremonies, joined by James “Hoover” Widdoes, Peter “Boon” Riegert, Mark “Neidermeyer” Metcalf, James “Greg Marmalard” Daughton, and Martha “Babs” Smith. Together, they bring the spirit of the classic comedy to life — minus the threat of Double Secret Probation — for a celebration that honors the rule-breaking humor and legacy of one of Hollywood’s most influential comedic storytellers. 

At the heart of the afternoon’s programming is the official Groundhog Day Ceremony, where Chicago Harry, a live groundhog, will emerge from his tree stump to reveal whether he sees his shadow — a ritual that playfully continues the city’s connection to the classic film and seasonal tradition. Also returning to the stage will be Richard Henzel, known to fans as the voice of the DJ from Groundhog Day, helping to usher in the ceremony with a familiar touch.

Harry Caray’s will transform into an immersive experience that celebrates Ramis’ remarkable career with themed décor, music and menu items inspired by both Groundhog Day and Animal House. Guests can pose for photos with Chicago Harry and a giant “Eat Me” cake, and explore tributes to Ramis’ work, including artifacts from his films that highlight his lasting cultural impact. 

The celebration also includes regular dining service, and attendees can enjoy food and beverages inspired by the films while taking in the lively atmosphere. Discounted parking at Navy Pier will be available with validation, making it easy for locals and visitors alike to join in the fun. Togas are optional — but highly encouraged.
