Recent findings from a Pew Research Center survey reveal a notable shift in global sentiment, with views of China and its leader Xi Jinping improving, while perspectives on the US and President Donald Trump decline. The survey, encompassing data from 25 countries from January to April 2025, highlights a complex international landscape. These countries span the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, North America, and sub-Saharan Africa.
The survey observed an uptick in favorable opinions of China in 15 out of the 25 countries surveyed, marking a significant change since 2020. This positive trend is evident despite the enduring effect of historic lows in views following the COVID-19 pandemic. Confidence in Xi Jinping's capability to manage international affairs has concurrently grown. However, the overall perception remains broadly negative, with a distinct difference in opinion between middle-income and high-income nations.

Economically, China is perceived as the world's leading economic power by a median of 41% of adults surveyed, closely followed by the US at 39%. This represents a significant shift in views from two years prior, where America was predominantly seen as the top economy. In numerous countries, there is a growing preference to strengthen economic ties with China over the US, despite the latter being traditionally favored. Countries like Mexico reflect this trend, where 45% prioritize economic relationships with China.
Conversely, views on the US and President Trump have shifted downward. While China enjoys improved perception, trust in Trump's handling of global economic issues has waned. As reported by Yahoo News and WNCT, more people globally are viewing China as a primary economic ally, influenced by diminishing confidence in Trump.
The findings illustrate fluctuating geopolitical dynamics, with international opinions of these global powers reaching a level not seen since before President Biden's tenure. As global economic and political landscapes evolve, the balance of opinion plays an increasingly pivotal role in international relations.
