In one of the largest technology acquisitions ever, Elon Musk's SpaceX has agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the popular AI coding platform Cursor, in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion. The transaction comes just days after SpaceX's blockbuster public market debut and signals an aggressive push deeper into the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector.

Cursor has become one of the hottest names in AI-powered software development, helping programmers write, edit and debug code using artificial intelligence. Founded in 2022 by four MIT graduates, the San Francisco-based startup has experienced explosive growth, attracting enterprise customers and generating billions in annualized revenue.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen SpaceX's AI operations, including its Grok chatbot and broader AI initiatives. Industry analysts say the deal gives SpaceX access to one of the fastest-growing developer platforms in the world while providing Cursor with the massive computing power needed to train more advanced AI models.

The companies had already been working closely together. Earlier this year, SpaceX secured an option to acquire Cursor or pursue a major strategic partnership, laying the groundwork for Tuesday's announcement.

Investors cheered the news. SpaceX shares climbed sharply following the announcement, adding hundreds of billions of dollars to the company's market value and helping propel it ahead of Amazon in market capitalization rankings. The acquisition further cements Musk's ambition to build an integrated technology empire spanning space exploration, satellite communications and artificial intelligence.

For the AI industry, the deal underscores the growing importance of AI coding assistants, often referred to as "vibe coding" tools. Cursor's software has become a favorite among developers because it allows users to work with multiple leading AI models while automating large portions of the coding process.

The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. According to reports, the agreement includes a significant breakup fee should the merger fail to proceed.
