Lyric Opera bolsters board with top talents, including Smashing Pumpkin’s Billy Corgan

Lyric Opera of Chicago has elected five nationally known leaders to its Board of Directors, according to a press release by the organization. The move adds deep expertise in music, arts, business, law, and civic work. These members started their terms right away.

Billy Corgan, Edmund Lester, Suzanne Mulshine, John Sabl, and Michael Strautmanis won unanimous votes from the board. They bring professional wins, leadership skills, and community ties. This fits Lyric Opera Chicago's role as a top U.S. opera group with strong Chicago roots.

"These five extraordinary leaders bring diverse expertise and a shared passion for the arts," said Sylvia Neil, Board Chair of Lyric Opera of Chicago, according to the announcement. "Their insights and experience will not only strengthen Lyric’s global presence but also inspire new ways to connect locally with Chicago’s community, ensuring our work resonates with audiences today and for generations to come."

Billy Corgan’s continued ties with Lyric Opera

Billy Corgan, founder of the Grammy-winning band Smashing Pumpkins, recently worked with Lyric Opera Chicago on "A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness." The show marked 30 years of the band's hit album, the press release noted. It mixed rock with orchestra and chorus for global buzz.

Corgan, a Chicago native, runs Madame ZuZu’s Tea House and leads the National Wrestling Alliance. Additionally, he supports animal welfare groups like PAWS Chicago, the press release confirmed.

New members' diverse strengths

According to the announcement, Edmund Lester serves as senior vice president at U.S. Bank. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University. Lester has backed the arts, including past roles on Lyric Opera Chicago's Guild Board.

Suzanne Mulshine, a business leader and lawyer, led Welsh, Inc., as president and general counsel, the press release noted. She chairs events like the 2025/26 Opening Gala for Lyric Opera Chicago. Mulshine aids education and youth programs, as well.

John Sabl handles mergers at Croke Fairchild Duarte & Beres LLC, the announcement states. He worked at Sidley Austin and for the City of Chicago. Sabl serves on boards for Rush University Medical Center and Arts Club of Chicago.

Michael Strautmanis is the chief corporate affairs officer at The Obama Foundation. According to the press release, he pushes civic programs and leads My Brother’s Keeper Alliance. Strautmanis has Chicago ties from his University of Illinois degrees.

The additions join a strong board lineup. They aim to grow the company's reach and local impact.
