Wednesday, July 16, 2025, marks National Hot Dog Day, a celebration that falls right in the middle of what experts call hot dog season, according to USA Today's coverage of the annual food holiday. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day represents the peak time for hot dog consumption, with Americans purchasing about 38% of their yearly hot dog supply during these summer months, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. This surge in sales generates approximately $1.16 billion in revenue, as reported by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

The council established this special day during the pandemic, designating the third Wednesday in July as the official celebration date. USA Today notes that during hot dog season, Americans consume an astounding 7 billion hot dogs, which breaks down to about 818 hot dogs being eaten every second across the country. This massive consumption showcases the deep connection between summer activities and this classic American food item.

Food establishments across the nation are rolling out special promotions to honor this beloved summer staple, as highlighted in Today's comprehensive roundup of National Hot Dog Day deals. Major chains like 7-Eleven are offering Big Bite hot dogs for just $2 through July 22 for loyalty program members, while Circle K provides an incredible deal of two roller grill hot dogs for only $1 through their mobile app. Dog Haus is celebrating both the holiday and their 15th anniversary with free Haus Dogs for rewards members on July 16, followed by buy-one-get-one-free offers through July 31.

The celebration of National Hot Dog Day has deep historical roots, with the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council originally creating this holiday in 1991 to coincide with a hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill, according to 22 News WWLP's report on the western Massachusetts celebration. This annual tradition occurs every year on a Wednesday in July, reinforcing the connection between summer weather and hot dog enjoyment. 22 News WWLP emphasizes that hot dogs offer incredible versatility in preparation methods, from traditional grilling and fire-toasting to boiling, pan-frying, and rotisserie cooking.

The topping possibilities are virtually endless, ranging from basic condiments like ketchup, mustard, and relish to more elaborate additions such as onions, mayonnaise, cheese, bacon, chili, and sauerkraut. Local establishments in western Massachusetts are joining the celebration, with Yelp highlighting top spots including Foley's Franks food truck in Northampton, Jack's Hot Dog Stand in North Adams, and various other regional favorites that showcase the widespread appeal of this American classic.
