You can’t beat the Chicago Riverwalk—in October

Most Chicagoans think of of Chicago’s Riverwalk as mainly a summer excursion.  Which of course it is, and enjoyed by many locals as well as tourists. But based on past experience, and from a few recent late September weekends, autumn— and particularly October—is one of the best times to take a stroll down this wonderful strip along the river.

Don’t write the Riverwalk off your places to visit for the season just yet.

The cool, crisp sunshine (not always, but usually we get that in October) just adds to the sparkle, while the people-watchingand things to do are plentiful for sure.

If nothing else, it is a spectacular walk—maybe a mile and a half in total. Watching the kayakers, and the small boats, as well as the larger boats like the famed Architecture Cruises constantly passing by, is a beautiful sight to see. Then, looking the other way, you have an abundance of restaurants and places people can stop for a drink.

All those great places are perfect for those wonderful October sunny days we so often get. In fact, there is almost something a little “decadent” about sitting in the October sunshine and having a beer while watching the people and the boats pass by. In summertime it is expected; in October you feel like sneaking in some extra pleasures.

As always, from Taco Rio on the east end to Sweet Gelato on the west end, there is no lack of great places to stop and rest for a drink or a bite to eat on the Riverwalk.

The Island Party Hut Tiki Bar and Grill has special Saturday Oktoberfest celebrations, as does The Northman Beer and Cider Garden, while places like The Beat Kitchen, The Community Marketplace, City Winery, Chicago Brewhouse and O’Brien’s Restaurant all offer plenty of seating, great views and good eats and drinks.

If you haven’t been yet, or if you are a regular visitor to the Riverwalk, or anywhere in the vast in-between, don’t write it off your things-to-do list just yet.

October is a wonderful time to stroll the Riverwalk and take in all that it has to offer.
