Chicago Bears defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 on Monday Night Football

The Chicago Bears rebound in the spotlight with a commanding 27-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. The game, hosted at Soldier Field, moves the team to 2-1 on the season and leaves them tied for second in the NFC North. 

The Bears entered the matchup missing star quarterback Caleb Williams, who was forced to exit last week's game with a hamstring injury. To make matters worse, second-string option Tyson Bagent, only recently cleared concussion protocol, meaning the team was led by 38-year-old journeyman Case Keenum. Keenum, who largely operates in a player-coach role, helping to guide the younger talent, hadn't started a game since December of 2023 with the Bears, being the eighth team of the veteran's career, according to ESPN.

Fans need not have worried, as Keenum came out of the gate sharp, guiding the team to a touchdown on the opening possession. The first half proceeded to twist and turn, marred by two Eagles turnovers, goal-line stops, and costly penalties for both teams. After a Cairo Santos field goal, Philadelphia put together an impressive two-minute drive to score a touchdown as time expired, producing a 10-7 score heading into the break.

Keenum continued his impressive performance into the second half, leading a field goal drive before completing a 41-yard touchdown pass to offseason acquisition Khalif Raymond, stretching Chicago’s lead to 13. A critical interception by the Bears defense on the eve of the fourth quarter led to a Keenum rushing touchdown, which all but secured the victory.

The win was a much-needed shot in the arm for a team left deflated after a defeat to Minnesota last weekend and the absence of Williams. Keenum received a well-deserved standing ovation from a raucous Soldier Field crowd after an inspiring display against a difficult Eagles opponent.

The matchup marked the first of a whopping seven standalone primetime games for the Bears, including contests on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.    

Chicago will now host the New York Jets next weekend before traveling to Lambeau Field to take on arch-rival Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Oct. 11. Williams’s return remains week to week, meaning Keenum or Bagent may be called upon again moving forward.
